Upcoming Events

Poverty in BC - Teachers Taking Action and Making a Difference
Friday, February 17, 2012
8:30am-3:00pm
Carleton Elementary School
3250 Kingsway (and Joyce)
Keynote Speaker: Seth Klein, CCPA
Panelists: Adrienne Montani, First Call BC Child & Youth Advocacy; Janey Lee, teacher; Trish Garner, BC Poverty Reduction Coalition; Suzanne Holden, teacher.
BC has the highest child poverty rate in Canada and is one of the wealthiest provinces in the country. BC is also one of the few provinces without a poverty reduction plan. As teachers we are in a unique situation because we see the reality of these statistics in our classrooms, and we understand the negative effects that poverty has on the children we teach.  Participants will gain a better understanding of the causes of poverty and the barriers that people living in poverty face. Participants will develop strategies to ensure that all students have equal access to resources, support and opportunities through long-term systemic change.
Registration deadline February 10, 2012. Click here for registration form or contact Vilma Miller at VESTA, 604-873-8378, vilmam@vesta.ca. Organized by VESTA and Surrey Teachers' Associations Anti-Poverty Committees.
