BCTF Representative decides on strike vote

Strike Vote Results
The results of the provincial strike vote show overwhelming support for a “teach only” campaign of job action this fall.

90% of teachers voted yes with approximately 70% of teachers participating in the vote.

Results of the vote will be communicated to the Labour Relations Board on June 29, 2011.

Why did teachers vote to strike?
Teachers throughout BC are united in their determination to achieve their bargaining goals:

1.  Improved teaching and learning conditions, including prep time.
2.  Fair improvements to salary and benefits.
3.  Restoration of local bargaining rights to achieve local solutions.

Members can access further information through the BCTF Members Only Portal.

Representative Assembly decides on strike vote

The BCTF Representative Assembly passed the following motion:

Recommendation 1
That, on the advice of the Executive Committee, if there is a lack of progress in negotiations a provincial LRB supervised strike vote be conducted between June 24, 27 and 28, 2011.

Teachers need to send a strong message showing commitment to our bargaining objectives:

·
improved class size, class composition, ratios and case loads, and preparation time
·

fair and reasonable compensation packages (wages and benefits)
·

local bargaining to resolve local problems.

We must let the government know we will not accept any contract strips or concessions.

Government has made clear that their objectives concentrate on strengthening management rights by:

·

eliminating job security (strip seniority, layoff, and recall)
·

controlling PD (tie professional development to ministry goals and reduce teacher autonomy)
·

evaluating teachers annually and removing protections on discipline and dismissal
·

entertaining flexibility and financial efficiency of class size/class composition.

Members need to be involved and follow developments closely: stay connected at www.bctf.ca Click on “BCTF Members Only” and sign up to MyBCTF members only portal.

Vote YES to secure the best possible negotiated settlement for teachers.
